Ever since I found out that people can send bots to their video conference calls to take notes and serve as their proxies at a meeting, I’ve been reflecting on that iconic scene from the 1980s film Real Genius where over the course of a semester students (and eventually their professor) realize they can just skip class entirely with the help of technology. This scene now seems less funny and more prophetic today. And so I’ve been itching to do another cartoon about Artificial Intelligence and how a lot of the “new features” being thrust upon us aren’t so much “productivity tools” as they are novel instruments for phoning it in and not showing up as our full selves.
