I forgot to bring my sketchbook with me this weekend, but thankfully I had this drawing from last July already scanned and saved on my computer. It just hadn’t been cleaned up and colourized yet. I’m a huge fan of ’s cartoons, and recently I came across a comment where she self-described her comic style as “expressionist.” I couldn’t agree more. I’ve always been fascinated by conceptual illustrations and admired those who do it well. For me, this weekend’s release might be the closest I get to that style when I try (and there’s no comparison).

I came very close to changing “Freestyle Clapping” to “Freestyle Slapping,” but my partner reminded me that it would be off brand. The Push Button Heads don’t seem to have a malicious bone in their bodies (if they have an actual skeletal structure; I haven’t decided yet).

I also have to credit my partner this week for suggesting “Doubles Baseball.” I thought of possibly having the two characters spoon each other while holding the same bat, but I worried the composition wouldn’t be as legible to the viewer. Still, I imaging two batters would be better than one, if allowed, especially for the spectators.

I can’t believe I missed posting a comic last weekend! I’d say that my week disappeared completely from my calendar (as depicted in my cartoon), but that couldn’t be further from the truth. My partner and I have been moving fast in all directions trying to get our house up for sale, and we just lost track of time. See you next week. Now that the cast is off my forearm, sadly I’m experiencing more pain now than the last few weeks because I can move my arm and wrist in ways I hadn’t been able to do since the surgery. Everything feels raw. But I’m surviving. It hurts, but no pain, no gain I suppose.

This weekend’s comic pays tribute to the question I’ve been asked consistently throughout this whole experience: “How’s your pain on a scale from one to ten?” I wish I could answer with the irrational number π (3.141592653…etc.) sometimes, just to be difficult. I even tried to work π into this weekend’s cartoon, but couldn’t get the punch line to land quite right.

The cast on my forearm comes off this Wednesday! Until then, here’s a hidden gem from my archives (c. 2015) when my partner and I acquired a cute teardrop trailer for our mountain adventures. We named the trailer “Toby,” and this inspired me to design a whole collection of whimsical and impractical trailer concepts, each with an appropriate nickname.
